Jolfa neighborhood, Isfahan

Nearly 400 years ago, by the order of Shah Abbas of the Safavid dynasty, the people of a city, now located in present-day Azerbaijan, left their homes and settled in the city of Jolfa. These people, all Armenians, endured a harsh autumn and winter on their journey, but with the arrival of spring, they moved to the provinces of Isfahan Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. About 3,000 families from this group entered the city of Isfahan, and the king, to demonstrate his goodwill, gifted them lands along the Zayandeh River. These lands have now turned into a beautiful township with unique architecture and were named New Jolfa, reflecting the original homeland of the Armenians.
