The Pigeon Tower of Meybod

Although most people, especially urban dwellers, consider pigeons a nuisance, these birds were highly valued in Iran about five centuries ago, particularly their droppings! Pigeon towers were built as homes for these pigeons, and each tower could house more than 14,000 pigeons.

The droppings of the pigeons were collected in these towers and used as fertilizer. The Pigeon Tower of Meybod, with its four thousand pigeon nests, is one of the most famous pigeon towers in Iran.
