Day 1: Tehran to Sari by Train
The adventure begins in Tehran, the bustling capital of Iran, nestled on the southern slopes of the Alborz mountain range. Our destination is Sari, the picturesque capital of Mazandaran province, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, located near the Caspian Sea and within the Alborz’s embrace.
Embracing Iran’s climate diversity, this journey showcases the country’s unique ability to transition from plains to forests and mountains to seas within hours. Adding to the allure is the journey by train, a voyage that merges the beauty of Iran’s landscapes with the charm of rail travel.
Departing from Tehran Railway Station on the Northern Railway, our path takes us through the scenic plains of Simindasht and Zarindasht, where the earth’s colorful veins and mountain erosion present a captivating vista beside verdant orchards.
Passing through stations like Bon-e-Koh, entering Kobuter Dareh Valley, and marveling at Mahabad Station’s namesake similarity with West Azerbaijan’s city, our train journey is a passage through Iran’s diverse landscapes and histories. The trek through the Alborz mountains, crossing the Vresk Bridge to reach Vresk Station, is a historical odyssey, marking an essential chapter in Iran’s contemporary narrative.
As we approach Sari, the greenery thickens, welcoming us to the lush landscapes of the north. In Sari, a range of guesthouses and hotels offers comfortable stays, but advance booking is advised to ensure accommodation in this tourist city.
Day 2: Sari's Coastal Charm
The journey from Sari station to the Caspian Sea’s shores spans about 30 kilometers, leading to the serene beach of Khazarabad. Here, historical treasures dating back to the Safavid era, including the Abbasid palace, bathhouse, and mosque, await exploration, offering a glimpse into Iran’s rich past.
As our tour concludes, we prepare for the return to Tehran, boarding the night compartment train from Sari. This return journey promises restful slumber, with early morning arrival in Tehran, marking the end of a memorable exploration of Iran’s northern charm.
This two-day train journey from Tehran to Sari and back is not just a trip; it’s an immersion into Iran’s varied landscapes, historical landmarks, and the unique experience of traversing the country by rail, offering a different perspective on its natural and cultural wealth.
