Afterward, peruse the handicraft stalls in the castle’s outer yard for exquisite souvenirs.
Golestan Garden, also known as Eram Garden, surrounds the castle, offering views of historic buildings, including the old Lorestan University and the army officers’ club from the first Pahlavi period. Before leaving the city center, immerse yourself in the local culture at the old Khorramabad market, and don’t miss the opportunity to experience a traditional coffee house and restaurant housed in a renovated bathhouse next to the market.
Your afternoon in Khorramabad should include a visit to the Akhund Abu (Jahangard) House, offering a stunning view of Falak-ol-Aflak Castle. This scenic route, paralleling the beautiful Karkheh, is not to be rushed. Take your time to enjoy the view and rest amidst the oak forests, preparing for an overnight stay in Pol Dokhtar.
Day 4: Khazine Valley Expedition and Finale
Our final day is dedicated to the breathtaking Khazine Valley, often likened to America’s Grand Canyon. The journey there passes through Majin, on the border of Lorestan and Ilam provinces, leading to the Valiasr Wetlands. The stunning landscape, marked by reed-surrounded lagoons, sets the stage for the day’s explorations.
Moving towards Khazineh Valley, a short walk from the parking area reveals a magnificent horseshoe bend in the Karkhe River, offering awe-inspiring views, especially in spring when the river swells. The wild mountains, deep valleys, and expansive rivers illustrate nature’s formidable beauty.
This journey through Lorestan can culminate in the awe of Khazine Valley or extend towards Andimeshk and Dezful for those with time, or return to Pol Dokhtar to venture next into the Dereshahr Valley in Ilam.
